For my science project I will be investigating the pop of two baseball bats: wooden and aluminum. The “pop” is how fast the ball comes of the bat. This project will help me better understand which bat is better. One thing we have to find is where the sweet spots are in each bat. In this case it would be wood and aluminum. The reason why I choose this project is because I love baseball. I said to myself “why don’t I make a project about baseball, because I thought it would be fun and an interesting project to do”. I’m looking forward to this experiment.
This project is relevant to society because Baseball is America’s favorite past-time. This sport has been seen worldwide. The love and passion for the game is very difficult to describe, this game has …show more content…
There is also a great amount of physics involved in bat/bat collision and the Performance of the bat. “In recent years, the issue of baseball and softball bat Performance has attracted considerable interest among players, the regulating associations, an even scientist”. (Nathan, Crisco, Greenwald, Russell, and Smith., 2004) The Interest is a result of new technology that have produced bats that perform better than the traditional wooden bat. However, the actual “pop” in bats is a bit of a mystery. Pop is the measurement of how fast the ball jumps off the bat. A bat with more pop would give all other things equal (like speed pitch) hit a ball further than another with less trampoline effect. (Just bat reviews) The use of aluminum bats began in the 1970s as an alternative to wooden bats. They were touted as cheaper and more durable. While aluminum bats were originally considered as a copy of a wood bat, time and play has shown differences between the two, including a greater ball speed coming off the bat and a faster swing as they’re much lighter in weight.
