Wilkes et al. (2014) identified that some participants chose nursing because in previous experiences, they enjoyed working with others. Through volunteering with Alzheimer’s Society and Special Olympics, I found interacting with other people quite enjoyable. It was very rewarding to see how helping others, either by keeping them company, or teaching them a new skill, could have such a positive impact on their lives. My mom is an RN, along with two of my aunts; my grandmother was a phlebotomist. It seems that healthcare careers are within the family. My family members facilitated my interest in health sciences and healthcare, in addition to modeling the necessary social and empathic skills needed for a career in nursing. I also received support from my high school biology teacher. She believed that my outgoing, bubbly personality, along with my interest in health sciences, and my experience as a lifeguard, would make me a more than ideal candidate for
