Many scholars believe that the gospel of Mark was written by Peter’s companion, Mark, but “the author remains unidentified in the Gospel itself” (Achtemeier, 653). Some scholars theorize that Mark, Peter’s interpreter, wrote down much of what he remembered from oral sayings and the doings of Jesus, but they were not in order. These scholars also stated, “Mark himself had no firsthand knowledge of the sayings and deeds of the Lord” (Bromiley, 252). In the gospel of Mark, Mark provides detailed accounts on Jewish customs and provides translations of Aramaic expression, which shows that Mark was writing for the Gentiles. In Mark 7, Mark states, “All the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly was their hands thus observing the tradition of elders” (Mark 7:3). This passage continues to describe the traditions of Jews, in regard to washing their dishes and their food. In addition, Mark states, “He took her by the hand and said to her ‘Talitha cum,’ which means, ‘Little girl, get up!’” (Mark 5:41).
