Discussions about initiating such an organization began in 1945, when the (World Health Organization) WHO was discussed among United Nations' diplomats. On April 7th 1948 the WHO was created, a date now celebrated as world health day every year. The WHO now employs 7000 people in 150 different country offices and is headquartered in Geneva. The WHO has been an integral part of the United Nations efforts in several key areas, including immunizations, health education, and ensuring the availability of essential drugs. A few of the public health roles of the WHO are health systems, communicable diseases, and preparedness and response during emergencies. The WHO sees a priority in assisting nations that are moving towards universal health care for its citizens. WHO works together with policy-makers, global health partners, average citizens, the private sector to support countries to develop, implement and monitor solid national health plans. The WHO is working with developing countries to provide access to prevention, treatment, and care for several communicable diseases like HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis.
