‘Her’ is a science fiction futuristic love story directed by Spike Jonze that features a depressed soon to be divorced man known as Theodore Twombly. Due to his boredom and loneliness, he decides to buy an operating system a form of artificial intelligence for companionship. The operating system names herself Samantha (Scarlet Johansen) and the two fall in love as the movie advances. Their innuendos develop into a relationship in which the two engage in a mutually satisfying sexual and psychological relationship. The problem, however, remains that machines can never replace humanity regardless of the fact that the AI could surpass human intelligence. The absence of a body that Samantha could inhabit was a hindrance to the relationship that Theodore enjoyed with her. That fact is apparent from the insecurities that the AI mentioned to Theodore. To overcome the challenge Samantha arranged for a surrogate lover through whom Theodore could use to experience physical intimacy with Samantha. Regrettably, the attempt is overwhelming for Theodore since it becomes a complete failure. Samantha is upset because she cannot fulfill physical desires that Theodore and she are in need of satisfying (Shechtman, 2014). The question that lingers from the analysis of the relationship between Theodore and Samantha is where the line between virtual love and real love lies. The argument that the film presents is that love has no bounds, and a physical attraction is but a portion of what intimacy demands. Hence, the sexual attraction between Theodore and Samantha developed as a consequence of the ill experiences that Theodore had with his high school sweetheart, Catherine. The movie reveals subtle, implicit attributes of human sexuality and the challenges that develop in intimacy extending the same to virtual intimacy. Theodore finds Samantha to be understanding and not demanding in comparison to Catherine when he specifically points out qualities that Catherine was lacking, but Samantha had. In that sense, it is apparent that explicitness of the movie’s message is that sexuality of humanity is geared towards a needs and wants relationship in which give and take is the premise of association.
