In New Zealand up to 80% Maori men and 75% Maori women have poor health literacy skills. Over 50% of the adult population in New Zealand have difficulties with health literacy (Korero Marama: Health Literacy and Maori, 2010). OECD countries also have similar result as New Zealand. The scale of one (very low skills) to five (very high skills) is used to measure health literacy skills (Work base, 2012).

The importance of doing prior assessment of the client before delivering the information, plays a vital role. This allows a better understanding and the teaching session to clients. As a future registered nurse, I will be able to provide quality nursing care to the clients by raising awareness to them by providing the health information.
The team teaching session cleared the picture in my mind on how to prepare the health education session. How the information can be taught in a simple language which can be understood by any person who is keen to learn and listen. Our team arranged a health teaching session on how to care for a child having a fever and this was delivered to new parents aged from 25 – 30 years.
