RICER is to be done at the time of injury to stop and prevent further swelling and bleeding within the first 48 to 72 hours. RICER stands for rest, ice, compression, elevation and referral. Things thing are important because getting the injured person to rest will reduce and prevent further inflammation because within the first few hours of the injury the muscle is weak and can do further damage. Icing this type of injury would be important because this will prevent the area from more swelling by decreasing blood flow to the area and help relieve pain; icing should be done for 20 minutes every 2 hours. You also have to make sure the ice isn’t directly on the skin and is covered in a towel to avoid burn to the skin. Elevation and compression are the final steps to help reduce the swelling in the injured area.
