The 1965 conflict began when young military officials sought to restore the constitutional governemt put in place by the then exiled ex-president Juan Bosch, this was the country’s first democratically elected governement afetr the death of Trujillo. Under their leadership, the country begins to economically deteriorate. There is also major administrative corruption that plagues every part of the government, which inspires the revolt of April 24, 1965.
Under the guidance of young officer Col. Rafael Tomás Fernández Domínguez, a group of young officials begin to conspire with the motive to bring back the 1963 Constitution, something the people of the country had been demanding.
On April 24, 1965, Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez spoke to the people through a radio transmission, asking them to take up arms and storm the streets in support of the coup against the ruling trio and through those means reestablish the government of Juan Bosch.
