During the preliminary stages of constructing essay two, I struggled with finding a topic, something that hasn’t happened to me since middle school. I let the fear and anxiety get me once again, asking questions such as “Is this a good topic?” “Is it relevant?’ or “Am I passionate about it?”. All these questions came into mind, but ultimately decided on the issue of performance enhancing drugs. When I was a high school athlete, I notice student athletes taking performance enhancers during season, and thought to myself writing an issue that I have a personal background with can provide benefits, but soon realize that it was much harder than I thought. The greatest struggle was not writing about the topic, but was finding scholarly journals. I found too many journals explaining how bad it would be for an athlete to use such drugs, and too little talking about why these drugs should be allowed. This issue filled me full of stress, like a stockbroker in the market who can’t find a stock for his client. Eventually with the newly found skills I have learned at the writing center, I was fortunate enough to find a few articles praising performance enhancing drugs. Having the tools set out in front of me, I began writing and determine that it would be perfect at the end. I have learned from my mistakes from my previous essays and learned to apply effective pre-writing startegies I had learned throughout the course of English 104 and with the help of our campuses Writng Center. Before doing any writing, I wanted to ensure that my essay would flow great, so I decided to read the book “ The Best American Essays” by Cheryl Strayed. Reading threw Staryed’s book had given me examples and a better insight of how an essay should be structured. I have found how to fix the problem that has been haunting me throughout this semester—commentary. I no longer feared writing or felt anxious after reading her book. After applying a few writing strategies, I felt more confident than ever. Fijishing the rough draft and proofreading it, I finally inputed my voice; this made me feel as though I just one a game of tag, me being the one chasing commentary. Writing a anyaltical essay analyzing the choices of authors was a very similar topic for me and one I knew I could write the best.
