For starters, brake and tire particles can effectively raise the toxicity levels within the soil. This can cause issues for a person in their lungs, as well as raise a particulate matter in one specific area. (Environmental Impacts from Automobiles, n.d.) While this is seen as a negative impact of the auto industry, they are also looking to decrease their carbon footprint as well. These efforts can be seen in reducing a vehicles weight, and making recyclability a top priority. The heavier a vehicle the more emissions are released because the vehicle has greater resistance to overcome. The European Union, which is the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers, has initiated a directive titled; “End-of-Live Vehicles Directive,” stating that by 2015 all vehicles must have at least 85% of recyclable materials.
