Building a good relationship with the client is key in the beginning of therapy and the first key step in the therapy processes. In the emotion-focused approach the social worker and client focuses on emotions, heighten emotional awareness, and try to identify the clients core problems. In Stan's case he expressed that he lacks motivation, encouragement, self-esteem and he wants to be more accomplished in life. In my service agreement with Stan I would make sure to establish a plan to help him become more powerful in his own life as well as have more control over his feelings. I would make sure to that all the goals that we establish are goals that Stan understands and embraces.
