Pressure is a cruel feeling that is abundant throughout all humans, and is especially common in college students. These students experience high amounts of pressure since they’re at the point in their lives where their development ceases. These concluding steps of human development are more commonly known as the state of Emerging Adulthood. Emerging Adulthood is a very hypersensitive period, between the ages of 18 and 25, where young adults start to become adults, and define who they are and what their values are. Consequently, pressure disrupts the Emerging Adulthood process and causes catastrophic infliction on the development pattern for young adults. The pressures of Emerging Adulthood, for the vulnerable …show more content…
This evolving domain can be affected very discordantly by large amounts of pressure, and this pressure can be blamed partly by cell phones. To prove this idea, a study was administered by Shari Burns and Kevin Lohenry to examine whether cell phones are a distraction in class. There were 188 students that participated in the study, and 142 of them were female and 46 of them were male. Out of the 188 students evaluated: 85.1% of them said that cell phones are an interruption during lectures, and 49.2% of the students noted that vibrating cell phones are very distracting during class periods. Another factor that causes pressure and the skewing of cognitive growth is: video games. A survey was instituted by: Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson, Jason S. Carroll, and Alexander C. Jensen to see if playing video games has any type of altercation on the ideals teens accept when they’re advancing into adulthood. In their survey, they asked a group of college students about their video game usage. With their results they concluded two things; that video games affect risk behaviors and they negatively affect self-perceptions. Cell phones and video games can add an enumerated amount of pressure to emerging adults by distracting them from school and by pressuring them to do and think abnormally during their …show more content…
This domain is related to pressure for with pressure can come health defects such as high blood pressure. The pressures placed on young adults by school and Emerging Adulthood causes them to: focus attention away from their health, and take drugs that enhance brain capacity. In a study, Sebastian Sattler and Constantin Wiegel surveyed many college students to try and grasp the amount of people taking brain performance enhancement drugs and why they would take them. Of the 5000 students surveyed, 4.56% of them admitted that they exploit prescription drugs due to pressure caused from education and testing. It was also apparent that the drugs gave the students more capability to harness the power of their brains, but had a lot of health risks such as very high blood pressure. The extreme pressure of school and the wanting for success caused those students to stress and take the drugs. Students have been so pressured that in college 10 to 25 percent currently have depression or previously had it in the past; as said by Mackenzie et al(2011). Scientists have discovered that the pressure from school and Emerging Adulthood leads to an extreme lack of sleep, depression and large amounts of the feeling of loneliness. Pressure is affecting the well being of students and is causing them to do irrational things to counteract their extreme strain dictated upon
