This is similar to The Giver because in chapter four of The Giver, the text shows how kids volunteer their time at the House of the Old and take care of the elderly. For instance, in chapter four, Jonas goes to the House of the Old and carefully bathes one of the elderly, Larissa. On page thirty-two, chapter four of The Giver, the text says, “Now your back. Lean back and I’ll help you sit up.” Jonas put his arms around her and supported her as she sat. He squeezed the sponge against her back and began to rub her sharp-boned shoulders.” Based on the text, Jonas’s careful treatment with Larissa shows that the society he lives in, greatly values respecting their elders.
