Increasingly in modern society, responsibility on the part of their relatives to care for elderly has failed. Elderly abandonment and neglect among the elderly is one of the several challenges we face today. Elder abuse is a common, yet frequently ignored problem in our society. The aged population is growing dramatically. According to International Epidemiological Association 2002, "Over this time period, the proportion of the population that is over the age of 65 will increase from 12.7% in 2000 to 20.3% in 2050; the percentage of the population that is age 85 and older will increase from 1.6% in 2000 to 4.8% in 2050" (p. 2). When you think of elder abuse and neglect you often think of elderly people resting all alone in nursing homes with no guests. Elderly abuse is not a problem of the elderly living in nursing homes, but it is right in our eyes. According to Elder Abuse and Neglect (Warning Signs, Risk Factors, Prevention, and Reporting Abuse), "Elder abuse tends to take place where the senior lives: most often in the home where abusers are often adult children, other family members such as grandchildren, or spouses/partners of elders" (p. 5). Most of the events of elderly abuse and neglect doesn’t happen in a nursing home setting. Often there is news of nursing home patient who are abused, but for the most part, elderly abuse takes place in their home. When elderly abuse occurs in the home, it is usually done by a families and relatives or a paid caregiver. It is often difficult to tell if elder abuse is occurring.
