Constant surveillance, militant police , public oppression, restriction of supplies. All aspects of a totalitarian state, suspiciously similar to our world don’t you think? I am choosing to focus on the threat that totalitarianism poses to our world and how it is subtly working it’s way into our everyday lives completely under our noses. The sources that I have chosen to demonstrate this are: the book ‘1984’, by George Orwell, the film ‘Children of Men’ by Alfonso Cuarón, an article by Devon Maloney titled ‘Forget Dystopian Fiction. Sochi Is Pure Dystopian Reality’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ by George Miller.

Here the Director shows how a police state dehumanises undesirables. Set in 2027, the world has fallen into anarchy due to a global infertility epidemic lasting 18 years. Only Great Britain has managed to keep a government structure in this chaotic state. The British Government has become an authoritarian regime that imposes oppressive immigration laws on illegal refugees, throwing them into cages and treating them like animals. The Director not only shows us this shocking treatment, but he reinforces it through the character, Jasper, who tells us that, “after escaping the worst atrocities and making it to England, our government hunts them down like cockroaches.” In today’s world, we see similar harsh treatment of refugees, with people fleeing from the civil war in Syria and migrants from Africa crossing the sea to Europe, being put into cages and treated inhumanely. A militant police force, resembling fascists, are seen beating, torturing, robbing and executing the refugees in Children of Men. We see examples of this happening in the real world with migrants and asylum seekers being beaten as they try cross in countries such as Hungary.
