World leaders should be able to secure their citizens from both internal and external threats. Nuclear weapons is an example of security from external threats, even though it causes so much destruction, also, it is a factor on why nuclear weapons still exist. Stockpiling nuclear weapons will give a higher leverage over enemies and prevent them from unwanted attacks, however, these are weapons that can literally blow up the Earth multiple times. Something that can cause massive destruction will not keep anyone safe, it will cause more problems and increase tensions with rivals. Robert Oppenheimer, who is known as the father of nuclear bombs because he created the first nuclear bomb, regrets creating it due to the power it possesses and the damage it can do and the that the world we live in is not safe with these nuclear weapons (Walker, Countdown to Zero). Using nuclear weapons to secure your own innocent lives and not think about others is what I call an act of evil and selfishness, and the United States is a good example for this. In 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked a naval base in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. In response, in 1945 the US dropped two nuclear weapons on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945 and on Nagasaki on August 9th, 1945. Japan stopped attacking which ended World War II. Are nuclear bombs protecting people in this situation? Clearly not. A numerous number of innocent civilians of Japan were killed in the matter of seconds and many more due to high radiation. This is also the first time nuclear weapon was used against another country. The accumulation of bombs is what world leaders think is safe for their country, the Catholic Church thinks otherwise. The church’s recognizes how world leaders think of these bombs and express their thoughts about these bombs in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is book that list and explains everything the church believes in.
