The toxicity was shown to be a protein component, referred to as gluten.” (International Journal of coeliac Disease pg 111)
There are many symptoms of coeliac disease which include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, wind, indigestion and heartburn. The patient may have an iron, b12 or folic acid deficiency, they may suffer from tiredness, headaches and noticeable weight loss. Depression can also be caused through coeliac disease as well as infertility and increased chance of miscarriage. Other symptoms include hair loss, skin rashes and joint pain. Symptoms will differ in each patient and not everyone will have all the symptoms listed. In many cases the patient mat not lose weight and may even be overweight.
Coeliac disease can be miss diagnosed as IBS in many cases and the only way to detect it would be to do a blood test. In this case the patient must continue to include gluten in their diet until they have had the test done. If they exclude gluten from their diet prior to the blood test it may give a false reading which could lead to misdiagnosis.
