Near the end of the book, Benson leads Tavia to the side that she thought she was running away from - the Reduciate’s. Marie (the leader of the Reduciate’s that Tavia thinks is her friendly librarian near her house) explains to Tavia that Benson has been lying, betraying and faking his love towards Tavia all along because he was being payed to do so. Marie even states; “Aw, isn’t that cute. He even got the Earthbound to crush on him. That was over and above even for a Reduciate, Benson.” (304). Benson has been abusing the power of love with Tavia for his own gains and Tavia now has to deal with the consequences of possibly getting captured by her worst enemy. Tavia’s choice of following Quinn into the forest was made based on her pure trust and affection towards him and not by logic. Therefore, the author is emphasising that Tavia has made a poor decision of following Quinn into the forest out of love as the creepy forest and afraid Tavia is predicting that something dangerous will happen in the forest. Also, as Tavia and Benson are being attacked by Tavia’s hunters (the Reduciates), Tavia recognises that the only way she will be able to save both herself and Benson is by using her powers (she has the ability to create any object if she thinks about it) to create a shield, Tavia thinks to herself; “Cast iron. I recognise the material. Just like the shield that protected Quinn and Rebecca from the bullets two hundred years ago.” (299).
