Well written stories create an emotional involvement to the characters and the decisions they make along their journey. When a character is faced with multiple choices it is natural for the reader to come to a conclusion themselves on what the best decision would be. The act of evaluating a decision already provides deeper insight on the reader. Through the process of making a choice the reader weighs the pros and cons of each option and as a result they are made aware of what they value. This information can be used as a basis for further realizations, such as a person's desires, or further questioned for further understanding, like the reasons behind why those values were formed. This knowledge can be used for future applications. For example, if the realizations the readers discover about their nature are negative, they now are aware of a problem and can set out on their own spiritual journey to correct it. Furthermore, by living vicariously through the characters, the reader has had a safe environment to make a decision, so they are able to apply the decision in the event that they are in the same situation. In this case, the reader will likely be able to make a better decision since they've had more time to consider.
