People should avoid the drinking alcohol because it has the ability to cause them to drink and drive, which often will lead to innocent people getting hurt. If one only has a sip of alcohol, many think the likelihood of a car accident is slim to none. It seems that only one sip of alcohol will not have any effects on how their driving ability is affected, but many people get into severe car accidents after drinking “one sip” of alcohol. Parents were getting angry that their children were dying on the roads due to reckless drivers. “Drinking and driving causes death among all ages of people ranging from 14-45” (“Teen Drivers”). “A major development in the anti-drunk driving movement was the formation of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 1980” (“Drunk Driving”). It is extremely clear that drunk drivers are a huge cause of death in the world today and movements had been started due to these deaths. Often times people believe that drinking on special occasions will not cause depression and/or suicide. One may believe this because not being a heavy drinker will lessen the chances of depression or suicide, however it will not eliminate the chances. Many studies have shown that alcohol is one of the main causes of depression and/or suicide. People who drink alcohol are more apt to become depressed and suicidal than non-drinkers, even in just small amounts. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “...[they] rank alcoholism as the third leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States” (“Excessive Alcohol”). The most important word here is preventable. The author is suggesting that alcohol related deaths do not have to be a part of people's lives. Some people drink because they are depressed and they feel that alcohol cures their depression, but it just makes the pain worse. When someone is already depressed, it can be very easy to fall into the destructive cycle of alcoholism.
