Josef Mengele, a doctor at Auschwitz, performed many medical experiments and played a big role in the “selection” process . Mengele often selected prisoners for hard labor or would send them to the gas chambers (“Josef Mengele”). However, if a prisoner was a twin, dwarf or had a unique genetic trait, Mengele would select them for his medical experiments (“Medical Experiments of the Holocaust and Nazi Medicine”).
At the Auschwitz concentration camp, Dr. Josef Mengele carried out many horrid and wicked experiments on many individuals, specifically twins. When the train loads of prisoners would arrive at Auschwitz, Dr. Mengele would search for twins to experiment on ( “Josef Mengele”). Before experimentation, the the twins would be sent to special bunkers and would receive extra food rations (“Mengele’s Children : The Twins of Auschwitz”).They were also tattooed with a specific number sequence. Josef Mengele’s experiments have dramatically impacted the medical industry today. After the Holocaust, the Nuremberg Code was passed. The Nuremberg Code was a document which provided the ethical principles of human experimentation. The document set the foundation for clinical trials today. This document states that voluntary consent from the patient is required and the researcher should avoid unnecessary injury and suffering (ushmm.org).This document were accepted worldwide and protected human rights. The Nuremberg Code ensures that something like Dr. Mengele's experiments should never happen
