I am writing this cover letter to you in regards to Metrolinx Capital Projects Group (Planning) in Toronto. I am interested in this position because ever since I been exposed to societies’ environmental and transportation issues, and Jane Jacob’s principles of urban planning, I developed a strong passion for transportation infrastructures, public transit operations, and effective urban planning, with a vision to design better communities. I would like to work for Metrolinx because they are one of Canada’s largest transit organizations with an objective to plan public transit to promote sustainable modes of transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), which is also a vision of mine. In “The Three Cities Within Toronto” by J. David Hulchanski, the author asserts that incomes in Toronto’s neighbourhoods and suburbs have become increasingly polarized since 1970 and can be understood as three distinct cities: city #1 comprises the relatively stagnant high-income core, city #2 is the shrinking middle income segment, dispersed throughout Toronto, and city #3 is the growing low income segment which surrounds the core. Journal #3 part:1 Freeway Jam was about the abundance of freeways In Los Angeles and the infamous Los Angeles traffic. One person mentioned in the reading was a man named, Reyner Banham who is basiclly the grandfather of freeways in LA. Los Angeles has the reputation of having the worst traffic in the world, and of course, everyone would spend more time tapping brakes on freeways if it was Thanksgiving. The picture of the jammed 405 Freeway depicts the Thanksgiving rush in Los Angeles well, and people make fun by saying that the freeway 405 has the name because “it takes you '4 o' 5' hours to get anywhere.” () Driving on Freeway 405 is infuriating not only because drivers have to drive slowly, but also because when everyone wanted to get back home as soon as possible, some people would change lanes, and lead to car accidents. In addition, since families want everyone to be back home around dinner time, they can get mad at a member who arrives late and claims that he or she could leave from work earlier. Yes, having to drive slowly is annoying, but what really touches people’s nerves is that people act upon their interests without trying to understand each other.…
Historical Buildings Saskatoon has lost even some of it’s most significant early pieces. The ‘Marr Residence’ was the “Second Empire” in Saskatoon and the oldest building, built in 1884. It was also one of the several houses occupied as a field hospital during the “North West Rebellion” in 1885. Walking is a natural task that we must take part in everyday. Before cars were invented in the late 1800’s, our own two feet was the main source of transportation. Since cars and other uses of transportation have evolved, walking has slowly diminished over the years. For the most part, we have brought this problem on ourselves. While attending a career and transfer fair at my two-year college this Fall, I only had one intention; to visit the Geneseo booth. After discovering that a Geneseo representative would be at my college, it was clear to me that I had to go. I had visited the campus before, and after getting a glimpse at the small tight-knit community of students, I had only confirmed my desires to gain admittance to Geneseo. In addition, after researching many different schools, my search always without failure boils down to Geneseo. It has the perfect combination of intriguing extracurricular activities, academic fraternities, and English courses that I am looking for.…
Diversity Brampton is a diverse and vibrant city. In Brampton there are approximately of over 600,00 people and is the ninth largest city in Canada, the fourth largest in Ontario and the third largest in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). “It is a multicultural city which consists of 209 distant ethnic backgrounds, and 89 different languages” (Unknown, 2014, p. 15). Immigration is an endless growth of diversification in Brampton. Statics show, in 2011, forty-nine percent of Brampton’s population is Canadian born while the other fifty-one percent were foreign-born.…
Quebec City in Canada is a city rich in both culture and history. The city itself is split into two parts, the old city and the new city. The old city is bordered in by an a fort that was once used for war and the new city surrounds the old. There’s beauty in the contrast of the two. New Quebec is all bright lights and businessmen while Old Quebec is brick roads and local shops.…
