The majority of literatures I’ve read are written by middle-class white men or women. Some of the literature may contain limitations or gaps within particularly ideas or theories. Attending this class I had the opportunity to explore nearly all areas of diversity, racism, oppression and privilege. This experience has affected me in my personal and business aspects of life which give me the skills and knowledge to perform as an effective social worker.
However, I would like to explore the evolution of racism from the beginning of its origin in the colonization era and examine how it perpetuated and is prevalent till this day. I’m in intrigued to learn how racism is developed biologically or socially learned. It seems clear and evident that racism is socially constructed, but still seems impossible for a worldwide perspective to change. I’ve experience racism and white privilege but the author has not. For example, the disadvantages I analyze within the context of race occurred on the first day of my field placement. My colleague, a white man decided to use profanity while expressing his concerns about his client and as a response to his concern, I happen to use profanity as well. Once the conversation ended, I was called into my supervisor's office. She informed me that her white colleagues made a complaint about my use of language. I was then told that my behavior was very inappropriate. At first I could not understand why I was the only one addressed on the issue of profanity.
