Within this newly created business market of online shopping and marketing a business manager must understand there is a limited amount of what an employee can produce. In the age of in of intelligent consumers they will seek out the cheapest prices it is imperative to understand when to apply pressure on the employee to produce or risk creating a hostile work environment. A manager is able to develop a mutual trust and respect when the manager knows when to challenge the employees. Through not pressuring the employees the manager may form a "Level 5" relationship. As Gibney describes "the relationship is formed through respect and operating at a high level for a long time" with the newly formed respect the employee will then apply pressure upon themselves to produce.
There are many differences between in the workplace today compared to fifty years ago and the responsibility to handle those challenges fall on the manager. The employees are different, they have different needs, and react differently to various types of motivation and a manager must adjust in order to get the most out of the employees. Applying the correct motivation can be the difference between success and failure of a business it's important for the manager to know when and how to apply
