If students and teachers continue to host debates which pit students against each other, society will continue to foster ideals of arrogance and unhealthy competition. Furthermore, the idea of the “doubting game” that society unconsciously plays fosters the idea of cynicism. With agonism in education, everyone is a skeptic, which contributes to society's inability to adapt to new theories and ideas. By pushing for more discussion based arguments like Tannen suggests, society can progress with new ideas.…
“The way we train our students, conduct our classes and our research, and exchange ideas at meetings and in print are all driven by our ideological assumption that intellectual inquiry is a metaphorical battle. Following from that is a second assumption, that the best way to demonstrate intellectual prowess is to criticize, find fault, and…
In Should Public Schools "Teach the Controversy" About Evolution? Gregory Bassham examines the controversial subject of teaching evolution in public schools. As it stands, religious entities have made numerous efforts to limit the teaching of evolution and demand the education of creation in public schools. The first technique that can be utilized is accommodating this will ensure the conflict is over by ignoring the issue at hand at times but this only recommended when you are in the wrong and need to back out gracefully. The next technique is compromising the situation. This will allow the two parties to come to an agreeable solution that may not be ideal for either side but is considered a quick fix to conflict. Then there is collaborating which is the technique that will solve the conflict. This is utilized when an issue is too important to be compromised but need a solution reached that will ensure both sides interests are met.…

The volcano of stress in my chest grows as my partner and I walk into the crowded lecture hall. It was the final round of the Valley Mid America Debate Cup, and we face a team ranked tenth in the nation. As we take our seats at the front of the room, the other team stands up and asks us a question that embodies the very foundation of debate. “Ready for the coin flip?”…
In this essay I will analyze the three main characters in “The Devil and Tom Walker”, I will also be describing how his wife and Old Scratch each demonstrate universal patterns of human behavior or commonly held beliefs. I will explain the theme of nonconformity in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Self-Reliance” and focus on the ideas of genius, society and self-worth. And lastly I will analyze the theme and mood of each poem by Longfellow, Dickinson and Whitman. To begin Tom displays patterns of human behavior and commonly held beliefs because he is a miser which means that when he has money he doesn’t really spend it.…
There is a big difference between conflicts and challenging behaviors, especially in the classroom. Conflict is “an expressed disagreement between children, usually involving property, territory, and/or privilege; or a mistaken behavior by a child or children, disagreed with by a teacher” (Gartrell, 2014, p. 512). While challenging behavior is define as “conflicts that cause harm or serious disruption; the term often connotes a continuing pattern of such conflicts shown by individual children” (Gartrell, 2014, p. 511). Challenging behavior is not usually found as an everyday occurrence.…
"The devil and Daniel Webster" by Stephen Vincent Benet was an amazing short story. It talked about the importance of freedom and sacrifice. Each and every character in the story plays a significant role to develop the theme of this story. The two characters that really stood up to me were Daniel Webster and the devil, Mr. Scratch. Daniel Webster is the hero of the story.…

Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…
