At this age, children are able to interact with others with success and be able to listen and follow directions in school. They are also becoming more comfortable with being independent and are confident in themselves. Children start to lose their baby fat as their growth and metabolism increase. They are not able to hold a crayon or pencil correctly or tie their shoes. In early childhood, children are able to walk, run, jump and have a slight grasp on being able to draw and write things. Balance and fine motor skills are also improving in early childhood, but they will be increasingly better in middle childhood. In middle childhood development, a children’s height can either be increased dramatically or stay near the same. Every child is different based on their gender, nutrition, and hormones. Children who do not have the proper nutrition are at risk for delayed growth development. Also at this point in time, children develop gross and fine motor skills and are able to do just about anything with ease. Girls and boys still have similar body shapes, but as they hit puberty, everything with soon change. The girls will begin to develop more fat on their body and more curves.
