Acceptance vs. Denial: Conquering the Enemy Selby continues his portrayal of Sara Goldfarb as a naive addict in denial: “She walked past the refrigerator…her eyes fixed steadfastly ahead at her goal, knowing that she had conquered the enemy and that he shook with fear-listening to him grumbling and rumbling, shaking in his boots already-and she walked like a queen, a television queen to her bedchamber.” This quote discusses Goldfarb’s many addictions: food, television, and amphetamines. Her addiction to television convinced her that she needed to lose weight, which led her to amphetamines, an appetite suppressor.…

If you were moments away from being in an inevitable car accident, would you try to stop the car, or, would you try to defend yourself from the accidents’ aftermath? Sure, we have all heard of the ‘fight or flight’ defensive mechanism, it was Sigmund Freud himself who described the first complete theory of personality, and founded psychoanalysis. His descriptions described the mental and emotional systems of defense, which we all have, but vary depending on the situation we are forced to face. The characters of Jonathan Harker and Lucy Westenra featured in Dracula by Bram Stoker attempt to conform to the social norms of the European Victorian era, however, occasionally the intellectual drive of the Eros and Thanatos tendencies of the Id surface…
Fear is described by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as "an unpleasant and often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. " Most often, fear has a protective function and is a perfectly healthy and natural response to danger. Many things can cause fear, some of them rational and some irrational. However, as Phil Barker explains in his essay for the website Beyond Intractability, fear can become unhealthy or irrational no matter what the cause. Barker explains that fear can be cultivated by one’s needs and the fear that those needs might not be met.…
The current understanding of domestic violence is that it is a combination of learned behavior theory and learned helplessness .This theory assumes that current batterers learn this behavior through observation. For example, young boys who witness their fathers beating their mothers are seven times more likely to batter their own spouses. Violence is learned through exposure to social values and beliefs regarding the appropriate roles of men and women. Violent behavior is then reinforced when peers and authorities fail to sanction batterers for using violence in their relationships.…

During senior year, I have thoroughly enjoyed taking Psychology AP and delving into the many intriguing topics that make up the course. The subject matter of this course is very interesting to me compared to some of my other classes like biology. I also believe that your teaching style has helped me learn the content well due to the topical outlines and entertaining lectures. Compared to other courses in which the teacher merely lectures in an organized fashion, this class has been very user-friendly in terms of understanding content. Overall, the three most intriguing topics that we have covered throughout the school year have been improving the ability to learn, sleep, and defense mechanisms.…
The Backfire Effect is the process in which a person argues against any information that conflicts with their views or beliefs. During The Backfire Effect, information that is given to refute something bolsters the original belief. The Backfire Effect is conceptually related to the confirmation bias because The Backfire Effect is the broader idea of the confirmation bias. Both ideas stem from the same issue, which is that there is an opposing view. Confirmation Bias confirms those views while The Backfire Effect creates reasons to why the opposing view is incorrect.…

This, not only showed me a visual, but also helped me understand real life examples of how these can be used. By doing this role play activity, I have been able to notice several of the defense mechanisms such as rationalization, displacement, regression and sublimation. Although there are a few more defense mechanisms that I have not listed, I am sure that I have noticed them in my day-to-day life, as well. As a student, it is easy to see defense mechanisms such as rationalization, which means to create a rational explanation of justification for our behavior; as well as, displacement, which is defined as redirecting a negative feeling toward a "safe" target (Hamilton, 2007). During my critical thinking process over these defensive mechanisms, I pondered across how these defensive mechanisms could be seen in my professional career so I took the liberty of searching for some examples via the internet.…
