The second estate consisted of nobles who were about 2% of the population and owned about 20% of the land. The third and last estate was the largest group and was about 97% of the population, they had very little rights and paid half of their income in taxes. The most important social cause of the democratic revolution in 1770s and 1810s was that most of the population had slavery and slaves were trying to end that and have social equality like everyone else did. This all happened in Haiti when they were controlled by France and about 800,000 slaves arrived from Africa to work in the coffee and sugar plantations where they worked under brutal conditions. This demonstrates that society was the most important cause of the Democratic Revolutions because most people agreed that everyone should be born the same with freedom. All the slavery in Haiti led to the Revolution because they all burned homes and revolted to end slavery.
