Define Biblical Counseling
Jesus Christ is the center of all true Biblical counseling. According to FamilyLife, 2008, “Biblical counseling is an approach to counseling that uses the Bible to address the issues in the lives of individuals, couples, and families. The Bible teaches that our thoughts, motives, attitudes, words, and actions flow from the sinful selfishness of our hearts.” (http://www.familylife.com/).There are three elements which I consider central to the understanding of biblical counsel. These are the Holy Spirit, Sanctification, and the role of the church Pastor.
The bible says in John 14:16-18 “And I will ask the Father and he will give you another counselor to be with you ever-the spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him but you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” Jay E. Adams in his book Competent to Counsel- Introduction to Nouthetic Counseling states that counseling is the work of the Holy Spirit and for it to be Christian it must be carried on in harmony with the regenerating and sanctifying work of the spirit.
