My project 1 assignment was to create a toy, I designed a dart board tosses game. The dart board tosses game is both educational and entertaining. This toy, game can be used by multiple age levels. However, for the purpose of this paper, the focus is about three years old preschoolers. The dart board toss game is created with an old sheet, drapery panel, scrap of red quilting fabric, sewing machine, thread, rice and eight colors of felt. I have begun by making a paper template of a tear drop, which is used to cut out the different felt shapes. The numbers are cut out of the white felt, then different color teardrop shapes were cut. The gross motor skills that a three years old needs are the ability to throw an object (ball) overhand, bend over to pick up a toy, and stand up without trouble. Secondly, the fine motor skills needed by the three year is the ability to use one hand to hold a small object such as a cup.
Some of the perceptual skills that a three years old needs for this game are the ability to see different colors, see things from a distance and have a range of vision that is several feet. According to a 2004 Academy of Pediatrics, children have the ability to see different colors and see things at a distance occurs by 7 months. Also, the 2004 Academy of Pediatrics reports having a range of vision that is several feet is developed by four months. Using Gessell’s theory of development, one would realize that all three olds may not be ready for the game. Gessell’s theory believes that all children will go through predictable stages of development, but not necessarily at the same time. While playing the game some three years will be able to name all the colors and numbers, however another three years old may not be able to do so. One child could be capable of tossing the bean bag over handed towards the target. However another child may simply drop it directly in front of themselves or only have the ability to throw
