The psychoanalytical lens helps us, as the readers, understand the characters and their actions throughout the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Before getting into that thought, it’s important to understand what exactly the psychoanalytical lens is. The psychoanalytical lens is divided into three categories, the ID, Ego, and Super Ego. The ID has to do with people’s natural instincts and the fact that people don’t even realize they’re using their them therefore there’s nothing they can do to alter them. In a way. Mc Murphy originally did whatever he wished, he was outside of the control of the institute. He went against everything Nurse Ratchet hoped he wouldn’t, but he soon realizes it won’t help him and that he need to conform with Nurse Ratchet and abide by what she says or he might risk never getting out of the institute or having to go to another institution. “He says that the Big Nurse’s just a bitter, icy-hearted elderly woman, and all this business trying to get him to lock horns with her is bull-wouldn't do anybody, especially him.” (Kesey 38) You betcha I'm becoming sly.” (Kesey 165) This quote shows how Mc Murphy went against Nurse Ratchet and what she would’ve wanted him to do and how he’s going to do whatever he wanted to do and he was getting slier at it. “Mc Murphy didn’t say anything for a long time after that.” (Kesey 43) This shows that Mc Murphy is trying to follow the rules, perform his duties, and not resist the Big nurses power because he is afraid that he will never be able to leave. He realizes that he’s wrong and needs to get along with Nurse Ratchet or else life isn’t getting easier and he will stay in there forever digging himself in deeper and deeper. Mc Murphy Tells Nurse Ratchet that he thinks the doctor wrongly diagnosed him, he claims he must have been misunderstood. "Doc the nurse left this out while summarizing my record 'Mc Murphy has evidenced repeated'—I'm understood, 'repeated outbreaks of passion suggests possible diagnosis, psychopath.' He told us 'psychopath' means I fight, means I’m overzealous in sexual relations. "Have the people ever been troubled by it? "No, Mc Murphy. I’m interested that the doctor at the work farm: 'Don't overlook the possibility that this man might be feigning psychosis to escape the drudgery of the work farm. What about that? "Do I appear to be a sane man?" (Kesey 52-58) Mc Murphy has the doctor and all the patients on his side, once again, we catch Mc Murphy doing what he wants and what will make him happiest not worrying about anyone else.
