The culprit somehow always has some type of hold over the victim as well as messing with their mind until the victim cannot tell the difference between right or wrong. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Abigail seems to be the one who threatens the rest of the girls telling them, “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (Miller 19). The girls were told to keep accusing innocent people and in exchanged their life would be spared; however, they did not realize their actions would have dire consequences when many of the accused were sentenced to die for their crimes in inhumane ways. The accused innocents were hung like animals and it left a scar that their families would always have. For the survivors, meaning those that confessed to the crime of witchcraft became unhinged and distraught. Greed in many places of the world is seen as a malignant thing because it can lead to a devastating blow in the sense of an actual injury or economically. In the short story, The Devil and Tom Walker, Tom was an avaricious person because he focused too much on materialistic wants that eventually he bamboozled his clients and they would come back stating, “you have made so much money out of me”, with him replying, “the devil take me if I have made a farthing” (Irving 365). When Tom made the deal with the devil he ironically was not expected to give anything back yet, but when tom realized all his greed was at a price it was already too late. Many do not understand that greed and materialistic items will not get you anywhere in life because they do not think of the resulting situations that cause harm to the victim. The fact is to be happy is not necessarily to have so much money that innocent people end up getting hurt due to how that money is earned. In the end, the spiritual essence is your conscience distinguishing the difference between doing the right thing versus the evil
