It is considered as the second nature in the civilized society. The people within the world state are conditioned to consumerist while they are young. Civilians are taught that when a good is in need to be repaired, they should do away with this deprecated material. “Ending is better than mending. The more stitches, the less riches…” (Huxley 52). The Civilians are considered lowly and lesser beings, if they don’t own the latest and greatest new products in the market. Likely Americans most view materials as disposable and replaceable. People identify themselves as the things they own rather than who they are. As Tyler Durdan said, “The things you think you own end up owning you.” Consumerism is due to the perpetuated idea that you cannot be happy without the things surrounding you, which is an idea created to ensure consumption for maximum financial benefit for corporations. In Brave New World people have no choice in what they do and never question the authority. On the hand Americans simply refuse to educate themselves on topic like consumerism and why this kind of economy exists.
