Jack 's discrimination and bullying of Piggy started in the beginning of the book. The boys had established a power symbol which was the conch. Whoever held the conch was able to speak. One time Piggy got the conch, but Jack would not let him speak. Piggy said, “‘ I got the conch... You let me speak!’ ‘The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,’ said Jack, ‘so you shut up’”(Golding 42). Jack is not letting Piggy have any of the power of the conch. Throughout the story it seems like Jack is only targeting Piggy out of all the other boys. Jack’s actions parallel to those of Hitler because Hitler too did not like certain people and there was no humane reason behind it. Also, Jack does not deal with Ralph very easily after they split up into two groups. After Piggy falls off the cliff, Jack says, “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore...I’m chief!”(Golding 181). Jack is basically saying that Ralph is not one of them and that he cannot take over. After this part, Jack and his tribe try to hunt down Ralph. Jack sees him as a threat to his power and position, so that is why he is trying to kill him. His actions fit those of Hitler 's. Jack was a powerful and dictatorial leader and Ralph was a democratic leader. Ralph was the original leader who focused on the well being of the group and wanted to get everyone rescued. Jack, on the other hand, took over Ralph’s position and ruled with most of the power to himself. He took advantage of the power and focused on killing Ralph rather than getting off the island. Ralph’s good leadership skill are evident in in every good leader. People who vote for leaders should look for the traits in the person they are voting for. They should avoid choosing leaders like Jack. Similarly, Hitler used his power for his own purposes while Roosevelt used his power to safeguard the USA and defeat Hitler. Individuals must be wise enough to choose the right leader. Roosevelt worked well with Churchill. There will be good leaders like Roosevelt in the future hopefully, to defend against power hungry dictatorial leaders like
