In William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream tale between several lovers, the contrasting impacts of illusion against reality, allows the demonstration of conflict through love. Not able to be terminated by one’s own consciousness, there are an array of incidences where magic has aided in the detriment of reality leading into conflicting circumstances between the pairs; Demetrius and Helena, Lysander and Hermia. Directly through the concept of love using a supernatural ‘love juice’ , Shakespeare is able to generate problems in his play and ultimately show that love is desired by all, but is not as straightforward as it seems.

Side by side after ranging arguments, suspected conspiracies, confusion and threats to violence, magic eventually sort matters out. Oberon: “Thou seest these lovers seek a place to fight. Hie therefore, Robin, overcast the night. And lead these testy rivals so astray” This quote describes instructions for Puc to control weather so the rivals do not get killed. Even when the love was at its darkest, Shakespeare managed to spark a glimmer of hope when Oberon revealed that ‘love juice’ had the capability of reversing the spell on Lysander and erase all conflict into a meaningless dream. This is made clear by Oberon as he simultaneously pursues his Fairy Queen - Titania. “Then crush this herb into Lysander’s eye,Whose liquor hath this virtuous property, To take from thence all error with his might” By morning during a hunting session, Theseus and Hippolyta find the couples lost in the woods, arm in arm realizing that the pair love each other after they explained their escape and the events that followed. Theseus gives consent and proposes a triple marriage and they return to Athens happily every after. The ending scenes of A Midsummer Night’s dream collectively unite and end on a positive note.
