Most of them end up not even getting checked out before continuing to play because they think they are okay and it is just a headache. Another question could be how serious should these head injuries be taken? From a big hit to a small hit, all hits should be treated the same way. When it comes to the head and brain you can never be too safe. In past years it was not mandatory to have a certified athletic trainer on sight of practices and games to properly diagnose a head injury. In recent studies it was shown that 40% of players continued to play regardless of having a concussion and that 16% were allowed to play the same day (CNN 2014). That can lead to future problems like Post Concussion Syndrome or Mild Traumatic Brain injury. In regards to decreasing some of the risks with football one last question could be what if they outlawed tackling and just made it flag football or two-hand touch? By changing the rules of the game it can ultimately keep players safer. Youth are more at risk for the fluid balance being disrupted when a concussion occurs. Just like when people think of football, they tend to think that the risks outweigh the benefits in playing the sport. However there are pros and cons to both sides. One pro of believing there are more risks than benefits is that, that person would be more inclined to not to play football. That would then deplete any factor of that person getting a concussion. Eventually reducing the risks of 2nd impact syndrome, which was what killed Jaquan Waller (CNN 2014). However, if that person is not playing the sport then there is no way that person could end up dead. Even with that being said, it does not stop many athletes. Like A.F Flores said, “For me I wasn’t going to tell anyone I was hurt. I was going to playing till I couldn’t play” (CNN 2014). It is hard to get away from something that the United States is surrounded around so much. Many individuals look up to the game of football. That leads to the cons of believing there are more risks than benefits. For instance, there would be less physical activity, fewer friends, and many life lessons would be missed out on. I do not believe the risks outweigh the benefits in playing the sport. From playing sports throughout my whole life, there is never a day that I wished I never played. Of course there is always going to be that risk of getting a concussion, breaking a bone, getting paralyzed, or even death; however, do those same factors stop you from getting in a car everyday.
