1) Identify ways in which self-conceptions and self-esteem change during adolescence.
Adolescent boys and girls as they grow are able to describe themselves in various ways. Many of the descriptions are actually contradictory. So they understand that this is possible and also they have an understanding of the use of synonyms like rather than saying there are smart they use words like clever or bright. They have evolved in their use of vocabulary and can use verbiage outside of the basic. An example of a contradiction they use to identify their self –conception is they would say they are funny and no nonsense at the same time. As far as self- esteem, the way it changes for adolescents their friendships and popularity hugely affect their self-esteem. Sammy described himself around what he liked to do such as sports, cars, riding bike. Everything was more centered around what he enjoys doing. Now Andrew described himself as still trying to figure himself out. He mentioned goals of being a programmer in the future. It wasn’t so much centered around the things he likes to do rather being centered around his goals and still trying to figure out who he is or what I believe to be his future self.
2) What age differences in friendships can you identify from listening to the way that the various young people describe their friendships?
The ages ranged from 9-13. There were 3 girls and 1 boy interviewed. The girls were more focused on a friendship based on truth and being nice to one another. The little boy who was the youngest of the 4 interviewed so his friendship was based on what they like to play.
