Being a nurse does not mean that you simply take vital signs or give medication to a patient, being a nurse is being a caregiver, an educator, a patient’s advocate and much more. There are many components that a nurse should meet or should be able to accomplish. The Mississippi Nursing Competency Model is a model that allows nurses enhance their education and practice, also facilitates articulation across nursing education programs and allows employers to know what are the different skills performed by the different educational degrees. The competencies include: patient-centered care, professionalism, leadership, systems-based practice, informatics and technology, communication, teamwork and collaboration, safety, quality improvement and evidence-based practice.
