Historical Context and Background
Thomas Jefferson would be regarded as the founding father for democracy. As the third president of the United States of America and a former vice president, he was very instrumental in drafting bills that championed for the rights of the people. However, by the time Thomas Jefferson was born, slavery had taken route in America and it was since hard for the Americans to do away with it. Slaves were preferred because they provided cheap labour and they were easily available for any manual work. The rich merchants were against the laws forbidding slavery because they knew they would incur losses during their harvesting. The black people imported from various English colonies were preferred by the Americans since they were submissive and they were also used to manual labour. This essay discusses the history of slavery and Thomas Jefferson initiatives of ending slavery in America.

Before the abolition of slave trade, the black Americans acknowledged their place and they did not hence aspire to compete with the white Americans who were not only educated but also wealthy. The black Americans were not allowed for instance to use the same public transport as those of the white people for instance and heir children went to separate schools for the black. Ending the slave trade would hence mean that the black would fight for equal chances with the white people and this was bound to bring conflict between them and discontentment from the
