Soon after this incident occurs, the Queen of England dies and is replaced by King James. With King James comes the Virginia Company, a joint stock company made to bring settlers to the coast of North America, and with the Virginia Company comes settlers in Jamestown. In Jamestown, Virginia, the first colony begins. Although technically the first place people came to was Roanoke, the place where America truly begins is Jamestown. Jamestown is the first place that people live in the New World and is a part of the first colony Virginia. Everyone at first believes Jamestown will be a success, but that idea soon proves to be untrue. After the first trip, more and more people come to the New World and by 1624, 14,000 people come over but only 1,100 of them are still alive. King James gets word of how poorly the colony is doing and he turns the colony into a royal colony; this later proves to be a common occurrence in a lot of the Southern colonies. This colony is Georgia. The forming of Georgia is done by James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe believes there is a need for a Utopian sort of society and intends on making Georgia into that type of society. Georgia is supposed to be a place where everyone is equal and has a true chance to make something out of themselves. Another new aspect that Oglethorpe brings to Georgia is the thinking of the Enlightenment that is occurring in England. Instead of having a set religion based on faith, Oglethorpe gets the people of Georgia questioning how different parts of the religion make sense. Religion in Georgia is open for the interpretation of the people. This is very different from most other colonies that especially in the beginning would be killed for trying to question God. The only colony that comes close to Georgia’s thinking is Rhode Island but even in Rhode Island, the religion is more free rather than questioned. Georgia is definitely an outcast as far as religion goes. One good thing that Georgia has is that with the new thinking about religion comes new ideas that can help the colonies
