The postmaster was hence forced to live a solitary living and with nobody to interact to he was desperate for human company. He opens his heart to the only avid listener available, Ratan, an orphan girl. They often used to slip into casual conversation which led them to have a comfortable relationship with each other. His desperate need for companionship and her desperate need for belonging led them to have strange but intimate relationship.

The postmaster feel sick, ratan cured him back to his health after this the postmaster decided to leave his job so his applied for a transfer reasoning it that the village had unhealthy working conditions. His transfer was rejected , but he has determined to leave the place therefore he decided to resign. When the time of parting finally came the postmaster felt that he should offer the servant girl something for all her work and the care she took of him so he offered her money, at this she was heart broken, the servant girl broke into tears and ran away refusing such help. Although in the end when the postmaster get on the boat to leave he wishes to go back and get ratan and take her home to his family but realizes then that there is no possible relationship with ratan and tries to comfort himself but thinking that there are so many separations and death in the world but the world moves on despite of all
