October 2015, the city of Charleston initiated a community wide assessment to assess the largest health risk to the people of our community. Concluding obesity as the highest of all health risks in the community. The leading causes of death directly related to heart disease, hypertension, or stroke, are all results of obesity (The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, 2014). According to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, obesity is associated with increased risk of all-cause and coronary vascular disease (CVD) mortality (Jenson et al., 2014).

With the stellar staff, including dietitians, nutritionists, and cardiovascular physicians can add valuable data to the program. MUSC has all the resources needed to host these events, with the ability to lead the community in changing the health of the entire community through education, providing maps, diets, health screenings and education that will change lives for generations.
