Before 2009, states would be able to make their own standards which had slightly more focus on educating students on the specific area that they live in. Now, with this new standard across the country, students are educated on being a citizen of the world rather than just a specific area. Forty-two out of fifty states follow common core, as well as the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity. Now, rather than learning math concepts and doing hundreds of problems exactly like the example, students focus on very few problems in very great depth. This detail in the work forces students to use higher thinking skills which has made school rigorous and demanding. During these stressful times, students, of course, turn to their parents for help with their homework, but it is very difficult for parents to help their kids the right way when they are not educated in the new standards. Due to the fact that not many are comfortably familiar with these new standards, it is very easy to get irritated and have a more difficult time learning. Getting the correct answer is not all that schools are asking for anymore which makes things slightly more complicated for everyone. Change is never easy to succumb to, it needs time, and it is normal for it to have a rocky start. It is frustrating for students because students can no longer just give their simple answer, they must be able to explain why and every step leading up to this answer. The students then come home to their parents and ask for their help, but the parents are also unfamiliar with the standards which leaves everyone involved
