It’ll be dark before long.” Throughout the book, Lennie and George often fantasized about a better life with more commodities, like ketchup. Lennie did not realize that the life of ketchup he desired would lead to his demise. George thought if he didn’t watch over Lennie he could have the life he dreamed of. So, when Lennie conducted his last intolerable act, George shot him instead of covering up his wrong doings. Consequently, George will always have to deal with the burden of killing his friend, and will have to ask himself if he did the world a favor by taking Lennie out of oblivion, or if he did a selfish deed by enjoying the world without him. Without Lennie, George could possibly have the life of ketchup he dreamed of. Desire can be a dangerous game.
