There has been a rise in the reliance of prescription stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin in the past couple of years and it has been said that they are becoming commonplace like energy drinks and caffeine (Jacobs, 2005). At least 20% of college students have used Adderall or Ritalin to study or take exams (Jacobs, 2005). These drugs can be found all over college campuses and are very easy to access. Jon accessed his Adderall very easily from his fraternity brother. The study drugs are either sold or even given away for free by people with the prescriptions (Jacobs, 2005). What makes Adderall so appealing is that it comes in time-release forms so students can stay medicated an entire day (Jacobs, 2005). Students can stay alert all day when they are studying and doing work just like Jon did. A problem with the study drug abuse on college campuses is that you do not really know who is actually supposed to take the drugs. It is problem figuring out who is legitimately diagnosed and who is deceiving the system (Jacobs, 2005). Jon is one of those students who is deceiving the system since he told Professor Wilkins that he is prescribed Adderall even though that is false. Another problem faced within the college system is that no student will own up to taking the medication even if it is prescribed to them since it is a huge issue on college campuses. If a student announces they have Adderall …show more content…
Professor Wilkins could have listened to both Jon and Jon’s classmate to see if there was a miscommunication or a sabotage in the works but instead Mr. Wilkins has a non-consequentialist point of view. Since Professor Wilkins has a non-consequentialist view, which is defined by Philip Pecorino from Queensborough Community College as “non-consequentialist theory of value judges the rightness or wrongness of an action based on properties intrinsic to the action, not on its consequences.” (para. 22). This is not the right way to go upon this situation because Professor Wilkins is not allowing all parties to speak their parts and not allowing to see other evidence and etc. Professor Wilkins is only worried about himself. He is trying to save face for letting this incident slip under his nose. He is not worried, what the impact of failing Jon on the test would do to his college career. Jon could be depending on this class in order to graduate from the university. Also since Jon is part of a fraternity, he is held accountable to get good grades and hold a certain GPA. For example, at Towson University, “A 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA is required for any student to join a chartered fraternal organization.” (“Fraternity and”, 2015, para. 18) With this being said, Jon is usually depending on his fraternity. For example, Jon asks his fraternity
