In countries that lack industrialization, agriculture is a prominent economic sector. They provide raw material such as cotton, coffee, and wheat that are exported to more developed countries, which in turn provides consumer product. However, the market of agriculture is solely based on a consistent environment that is favorable for their respective crops. With the impending issue of climate change, the respective sector is most certainly going to be affected. Droughts are prone during temperature climbs, due to the moisture that is drawn to the atmosphere through evaporation. According to NASA, the average global temperature of the Earth has roughly increased 0.8 degrees celsius since 1880, “with two thirds of the warming occuring since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15-0.20°C per decade.” (NASA, n.d.) The data presented may not seem significant, but if two-thirds of the temperature increase had recently occurred, the data presented may not be linear, but instead exponential, which can indicate further climbing in the near future. Another adverse effect of climate change is potential flooding due to rising sea levels, caused by the melting of ice caps in the Arctic regions. To coastal plantations, it poses as a threat because it risks chance of flooding crops (Queensland Government, 2015) , therefore risking declination of exports. Not only can this affect health of citizens, but will also cause immediate spending in order to expeditiously repair water systems. The reason for potentially dangerous water supply is that saltwater from oceans (because of the rising levels) and tropical storms can penetrate into nearby soil and groundwater wells, thus salinization of said water occurs. In addition, bacteria and algae find warm waters to be favorable to act as a breeding ground. The combination of salinization (which can manifest a “laxative effect”) along with pathogens can make individuals ill (Queensland Government, 2015), which detriments businesses as a whole because there would be less laborers present to tend to their craft. Unlike most developed nations, “sick days” are not an available privilege to these workers because their work is directly tied to supplies that nourish their immediate families and communities (i.e., water filtration, food production, shelter construction.)
