The two countries’ governing bodies has set the stage for differing societal values and cultural ideas between them. The United States functions as a democratic republic, where citizens are the ultimate power and authority in the country and delegate this power to elected officials. China, meanwhile, is a communist nation where almost all is collectively owned and managed by common ownership with absence of social classes, money and the state. The way a country feels about these ideas is measured by having either a long or short-term orientation. According to The Hofstede Centre’s research, “this dimension describes how every society has to maintain some links with its own past while dealing with the challenges of the present and future.” (2015). When a country has a long-term orientation, they are very concerned with the future and value persistence, order by status and modern education as a way to prepare for the future. A country with short-term orientation respects tradition, expects instant gratification, values accomplishments based on the short term and strives for quick results.
