Chevron Corporation's businesses are every aspect of the geothermal, oil and gas energy industries including exploration and production of energy. It is one of world's largest oil companies.
The foundation of the company goes back to 1879. The company was performing under the name of Pacific Coast Oil Company back then. Weaknesses:
• The company´s strategy of crisis management is not clear.
• As it seems in their CSR reports, the company´s policy is not proactive, it is more reactive.
• Despite of good defense in legal fights, the duration of the legal fights are too long.
• The principle of ´if its legal its right´ principle makes them give wrong reactions to important ethical problems.
• As it can be seen from the numbers of conflicts that they have, the company doesn’t have long term goals to prevent such cases and not put their reputation in danger.
Threats:
• The sector has its inherent risks. The company has already involved in a lot of oil leaks and spills accidents.
• There aren’t many market players therefore if something goes wrong with some project, everybody will know about it.
• Sensitivity of the industry. Any kind of small mistake might cause a huge disasters and may require stopping the operation.
