The “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver. The unnamed narrator who is also the husband undergoes an emotional change throughout the story. The narrator's wife used to work for a blind man called Robert whose wife sadly died of cancer, and he is coming to visit the narrator and his wife, but the narrator is not happy about the visit. we observed in the story the way the narrator sees and understands the world around him, his attitude is insecure, rude, arrogant, out of touch with reality, hesitant, unaffected, and also, lacking self-awareness. My uncle Adongo is no different from the narrator. He is insecure in his marriage, very arrogant, rude and also out of touch with reality. There are many instances in the story to prove this. The narrator his own words implicate him, he deceives himself by revealing how biased, and insensitive and ignorant he is. Those same words also show how lonely, distant my uncle is and sometimes I think he needs human contact, though her wife is always around. Ernest as Robert the blind man. Though Mr. Ernest isn’t blind he is a disabled man in a wheelchair. He is a man who has not allowed his disability damage his quality of life. He has close relationships, has a loving marriage, and is also open-minded and honest man. But sometimes becomes aware that his disability makes some people uncomfortable. The same thing happened in the story when Robert becomes aware that his presence probably makes the narrator uncomfortable, and recognizes how and the narrator’s wife and him have been leading the discussion all evening.
