Identifying the performance challenges and creating performance targets is the initial starting point of a change initiative. According to the Colorado Department of Education, priority performance challenges become the targets and provide the strategic focus for improvement efforts, which in turn drive professional learning (CDE, 2014). It is important to recognize the priority challenges and to create specific, delineated targets that can be used to create a shared vision for change. The targets must be specific and have quantifiable outcomes that define what would constitute success, as well as adhere to an established timeline for implementation and ultimately improvement (CDE, 2014). Teachers will:
Utilize SUTW to instruct the opinion, narrative, explanatory, and creative writing process to students.
Support the SUTW process by using all of the graphic organizers supplied by SUTW with fidelity.
Support the use of SUTW by setting up the classroom with visuals and materials that allow students to best use the strategies.
Instruct students on how to use a SUTW rubric for self-evaluation and grade the students accordingly.
Identify students that are performing below proficient and use the SUTW materials to reteach and provide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS- formerly known as Response to Intervention).
Utilize the SUTW strategies across all disciplines for note taking, reading comprehension, and integrated writing assignments.
The professional learning opportunities being offered at the beginning of this year and throughout the 2016-17 school year will allow these objectives to be actionable, assessable, and feasible.
